My beloved cat, Bubba, died a couple of weeks ago of a heart attack,
and I was devastated. She was my best friend!

I got a kitten on Friday. The photo has a brown tinge to it, but he is
pure gray.

The Confederacy in the American Civil War had an officer named John
Mosby. He was a colonel and became very effective in lightning attacks
against Union troops. He would appear out of nowhere, and the
Confederate soldiers wore gray uniforms. He became known as the "Gray
Ghost", very famous in American history, so the kitten's name is
"Mosby".

I have always wondered why you can so easily post a video to the internet and
have it play readily; but has there ever been a reliable way of posting a simple
picture? From here, we get a glimpse of your kitten from your link, but no more
than that.

I had never heard of Mosby. If your cat's life is half as adventurous as his was,
then it will be an exciting one:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_S._Mosby

His CO J.E.B. Stuart (famous for his wise advice that a battle is won by the side
that is "firstest with mostest"), founded the Klu-Klux-Klan. I hope the cats
around him are also suitably grey.

There was an American TV series from 1957 -1958 called "The Gray
Ghost", all about Col. Mosby and his exploits.

I often post links to single photographs. The photograph must be
uploaded to a "photo host", and the link is to that. There are many
free photo hosts including "Dropbox", but I use SmugMug.

We don't have a cat, but here's a horse of a different color:

Apologies, but I don't understand. Is there a problem with the link?
When I click on it, I get a good photo of my new kitten - more than a
"glimpse" (IMO) What do you see?

I was a fan of "The White Shadow." In a recent run in syndication,
it didn't really hold up.

Your kitty looks so small. And so determined.

At Lord Byng High School, in Vancouver (1950s) our basketball team were
called the Grey Ghosts. (They won the provincial championship in 1958.)
The school colours were scarlet & grey, so it probably had something to
do with that. But why ghosts? I'm pretty sure we knew nothing of Mosby.

Obvious influence of The Ohio State University.

I'll just add that adult Northern Goshawks used to be called Gray Ghosts, but the
name seems to have switched to adult male Northern Harriers (=BrE Hen Harriers).
Goshawks are much less conspicuous, but harriers have a ghostlier color scheme.

Rolls Royces tended to be silent phantoms or ghosts or wraiths. This was
an exception - 27litres and unsilenced. Overtaking the "fastest car money could
buy" at that time (Ferrari) - at 200mph on the Autobahn - should have made it famous.

You have the wrong (American) Civil War General in mind. Stuart died
in May, 1864. The KKK was founded in 1865.

Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest was the first "Grand Wizard" of the KKK.
There is no single person attributed to be the "founder" of the KKK,
but Forrest was certainly one of the founders. He later denied being
a member.

Forrest is also the one who is credited with a statement like
"firstest with the mostest", but it's not verified that he actually
used those words. Some say it was "Git thar fustest with the mostest"
and some report it as " "I always make it a rule to get there first
with the most men" or "I just took the short cut and got there first
with the most men.".

And though I found no evidence for "gray ghost" as a conventional
expression in OED, I did turn up one quote that suggests it is the
(proprietary?) name for a type of fishing lure:

The larger streamers, about 3-inches—Gray Ghost, Green King, Barred
Lady,..brought the smallmouths …
Field & Stream (1971)

Well, you may realize this but his name came from the color of his
uniform and the fact that he surprised Union troops usually during the
night; he came out of nowhere, so to speak, and he disappeared just as
quickly and could not be captured.

He must have been very well-regarded as he was made the consul to Hong
Kong following the war. President Grant said of him, "Since the close
of the war, I have come to know Colonel Mosby personally and somewhat
intimately. He is a different man entirely from what I supposed. He is
able and thoroughly honest and truthful." They became friends.

He had an interesting life as revealed by Google. He was involved in
a kind of a duel when he was younger and served some time in a prison
for which he was eventually pardoned.

For me "The Grey Ghost" is one of the names of the dog in the comic
strip Footrot Flats.

I don't remember that. I'll have to dig out all my Footrot Flats books
and have a look.

The pain has returned. The kitten was crying loudly all the time and
had diarrhea all over the place. My house stank! I did not have the
stamina or energy to follw him aound and bend down to clean up messes,
and Alma is away most of the time.

We think he was taken from his mother too soon. He was a cute litle
thing, but we decided to return him to the vet, possibly temporarilty.
We asked her if she would keep him for a few weeks, and we would take
him back. She refused. She said that she would just find a new home
for him. I don't get it. He might be sick with the constant crying
and diarrhea, but the vet didn't seem to care.

I still have Pookie, and she had been sequestered while Mosby was
here, so she is better off now.

A difficult decision. I had bonded with Mosby, but I can't live with
those conditions.
