[suborn] Interestingly stealthy meaning in the etymology according to MW.

"He and his successors must be made to realize that they cannot impose
their will on Ukraine and the West militarily, cannot [suborn] Ukraine
politically, and cannot prevail diplomatically."
https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/weakness-lethal-why-putin-invaded-ukraine-and-how-war-must-end

The meaning isn't the quest here whereas the etymology is.
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/suborn

"Suborn is from Latin subornare, which translates literally as "to secretly
furnish or equip." The sub- that brings the "secretly" meaning to subornare
more commonly means "under" or "below," but it has its stealthy meaning in
the etymologies of several other English words, including surreptitious
(from sub- and rapere, meaning "to seize") and the verb suspect (from sub-
or sus- and specere, meaning "to look at")."

It'll come as no surprise that we see the verb here a lot. Usually just
before a mayor goes to prison.

Thanks for that additional background information.

For me, I would have thought "sub" to be used more for "under" than for
"secret", which is why the etymology was of special interest to me.

My wife & I recently returned from probably our last trip to Italy, where I
could have asked directly from the source - had I known about it then. :->
