"One of the hardest climate puzzles to solve is how to cut greenhouse gases from airplanes. International travel is essential, but zero-emission flights are decades away. In Europe, where transport accounts for a quarter of emissions, policymakers may have a solution: get people to take the train instead.

Countries including France, Germany and Austria are spending billions of euros to remake the continent’s aging railway system. Their leaders are hoping to spur a renaissance in international train journeys, especially as the coronavirus pandemic ebbs and travel picks up again. After all, hopping on a train is often more convenient than flying (for one thing, there’s no airport security).

The European Union has an interest in pitting modes of transport against each other—it could push operators to find ways to lower their climate impact without passing costs on to the consumer. It’s a question of making rail more attractive, “instead of banning or disincentivizing aviation,” says European Transport Commissioner Adina Valean.

A revamped Vienna-to-Paris sleeper service, operated by Austria’s state rail company OeBB in partnership with Germany’s Deutsche Bahn, is set to start next year. While the 1,000 kilometer trip will take eight hours more than going by plane, it’ll generate a tenth of the emissions."

The train system in Europe is old and rag tag.. It will take a lot of
changes to make the existing train system sustainable in quality service
and efficiency to suit the expectation of the traveling public by
airlines.

And China is the most proficient and cost effective train system builder.
Europeans would, of course, do most of the rebuilding themselves. Nevertheless great opportunity for EU-China cooperation.

Scandinavian countries have used China construction infrastructure in
building their infrastructures and other things based on tender price and so
on.

They were very pleased with the works as well as delivery commitments made,
etc.

There is also a lot of opportunities for China to enter the former Eastern
European countries too.

Therefore, there is opportunity for more projects that will be issued by
those countries.

Well, they would be taken night train for long trip.
To be sure, time would be lost and the passengers would have to endure inconvenience for
both long and short trips. But from the European governments point of view, they are sacrificing
short term for long term.

How long before the poor-quality concrete sends bridges and viaducts

How about the 3-Gorges dam ?

China builds fast and cheap and there's a minimum of
legit engineering and inspection. Somewhat like Russia
in the 50s/60s, China prefers appearances over all
else. It will build a bullet-train system, invite the foreign
press to take pictures, make praiseful documentaries,
and then when it all falls down they won't tell anybody.
