Vivek Ramaswamy is a newcomer to American politics, but one who
managed to grab the spotlight in the recent Republican Debate with his
Energizer Bunny rapid-fire speech and - in my opinion, and in the
opinion of others - idiotic pronouncements.

After the debate, he was interviewed by Sean Hannity in the "Spin
Room" and Hannity asked him how his first name should be pronounced.
Ramaswamy said "Vivek to rhyme with 'cake'".

In every newscast I've seen his first name has been pronouced to rhyme
with "Dreck" (my choice of words).

Ramaswamy was the lead guest on "Meet The Press" this morning, and
Chuck Todd used the Dreck-rhyming pronunciation.

Ramaswamy's parents are Indian Hindu and Tamil-speaking Brahmins from
Kerala, so I assume "Vivek" is a common first name in that culture.

I am surprised that no one other than Hannity has ever tried to
determine Ramaswamy's preferred pronunciation or uses it.

Kerala is the most civilized of Indian states (most notably in its
treatment of women), but no doubt it has some unappealing people.

Dreck-pronunciation (of Vivek Ramaswamy) by a Hindu man:
https://forvo.com/word/vivek_ramaswamy/#en

and by a Hindi woman (only Vivek):
https://forvo.com/search/Vivek/hi/

I am not trying to correct the way Vivek Ramaswamy wants his name to be
spoken, but it seems that the dreck-pronunciation of "Vivek" is not wrong.

My Punjabi friend pronounces that name to rhyme with "cake", or in
Mr. Ramaswamy's case, with "mistake". Or if not an exact rhyme, it's
very close.

It's not a right or wrong choice for the pronunciation of the name by
everyone. I think it's been agreed here that every individual should
be the person who decides how their own name should be pronounced.

Ramaswamy specifically said he thinks his name should be pronounced to
rhyme with "cake".

I cited him making that statement to Sean Hannity, but he has made the
same statement at other times:

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/vivek-ramaswamy-fox-and-friends-freestyle-rap_n_64c2a437e4b0fd06594a0398

“I open up by saying, ’My name is Vivek, It rhymes with cake,” before
spitting some more verses"

If the heading/er had been worded more informatively, AUE's resident
native speaker of Tamil might have commented.

For the man's version I hear it sounding like 'vivik' (rhymes with 'stick').

The woman's version sounds like 'vivake' (rhymes with 'cake').

The subject is I presume Ethnically Tamil. and I think the Cake
pronounciation is "south indian brahminic sanskrit" the drek
pronounciation can be found for Viveks from Bengal and Orissa (also it
becomes Bibek in those cases)
