As a result of the UK banking shenanigans with Nigel Farage, we now have
a new word: 'unbanked'.

Coutts Bank (UK) recently closed Farage's account as a result of his
political beliefs rather than the deterioration of his finances. He is
apparently not alone, there are others similarly affected.

A BBC News item today described the phenomenon as 'un-banking' (hyphen
or no hyphen?).

One of the ironies of the story is that another affected person - who
bank-rolled Farage's Brexit campaign - is millionaire Aaron Banks.

Your headline suggested it referred to a prson without a bank
account (like "unhoused" and probably suggested by the parallel
discussion) but the explanation shows that it is in fact like and
probably based on "unfriend" in some Social Medium.

Either way, it's an ordinary use of "un-" in one of its ordinary uses.

'Unbank' goes back at least to the mid-1800s in other senses (to release
something, to unbank a fire...) - source OED, which also has the
quotation "We must ... use a bank to unbank the banks, to the extent
that may be necessary [to restore a safe and stable currency]" (Calhoun
1834) - a financial sense, though not the one used by the Beeb.

Such compounds may not be in the dictionaries ('disbank' is in the OED,
'debank' isn't), but they exist in the aether as potential words, I
think, and anyone can use them.

Coutts has un-Faraged itself.

Yes, but at the same time it has un-CEOed itself, twice. Two top
executives have resigned as a result. The smug Farage is having the
last laugh.

Can you be unbanked and homeless too?
