TONY BENNETT used to be the earliest debuting solo male singer to attain a Billboard #1 on its pop charts with “Because of You,” which topped the charts for the week ending 09/08/1951,

That got me wondering ,,

Utilizing the on-topic’s Joel Whitburn’s book “Joel Whitburn Presents America’s Greatest Hits, 1940 – 2015:The Top 10 Charts” as a primary source .. well, you’ll be surprised.

Please note that when it came to Big Bands, only the bandleader and the lead singer were taken into consideration (Sorry, Ray Anthony, born 01/20/1922, never had a Billboard #1),

The earliest debuting singer was NANCY NORMAN (born 04/23/1925) who sang the female lead (opposite male vocalist Billy Williams) on the novelty song “chickery Chick,” with The Sammy Kaye Orchestra for the week ending 11/17/1945.

Followed by:

MARJORIE HUGHES (born 12/15/1925) with “Oh, What It Seemed to Be” with Frankie Carle and His Orchestra for the week ending 12/15/1946,

Consider …

Canadian brothers JOHN PERKINS (tenor, born 08/28/1931) and RAY PERKINS (bass, born 11/24/1932), vocalists with THE CREW-CUTS for “Sh-Boom” for the week ending 08/07/1954 – please note that this was the “nice white boy” cover version for the song originated by the “trace record” [that was the phraseology of the time] group The Chords.

As for filling TONY BENNETTS spot as the earliest debuting solo male artist to top the Billboard pop charts is, the winner is:

BILL HAYES (born 06/06/1925) with “The Ballad of Davy Crockett” for the week ending 03/28/1955. Of course, Bill Hayes constituted one-half of TV soap opera’s first (arguably) “super couple” with his wife Susan Seaforth Hayes on “Days of Our Lives” in the early 1970s.

CONNIE FRANCIS (born 12/12/1937) is the earliest debuting solo female solo artist with “Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool” for the Billboard chart for the weekend ending 06/27/1960.

What's really fun about this one is that Bill Hayes and everybody ate
Walt Disney's lunch. This release had nothing to do with Walt Disney.
Hayes et al. paid the proper royalties via ASCAP, and that's it.

Walt never let that kind of thing happen again.
