Matthews is an odd character. He has his principles. He is stern at all times. But he can be fair. Very much like Matt Dillon he does what he says he's going to do. He is not a bully. But when he says he wants you out of town by sundown you better be gone or else. Matthews had to shoot a guy last night - two of them in fact - again. He fires his gun a lot, but only when he's drawn on, which is conveniently a lot. I noticed something odd about Matthews ala Joe Friday - the walk. Friday's is the best, truly a stand alone walk. But Matthews has an odd walk too. He hold his hands up about waist high when he walks. Sort of like he's dancing. He does not look at all athletic. Sometimes he'll show up at a house where outlaws are holed up and ask a few questions of the owner or renter, knowing there is someone hiding there but not letting on. "Ok, thanks, I'll come back later", he will say. Then he orders his men to surround the cabin and when he gives the order they come barging in guns blazing. Matthews seems to kill more people than Friday. But it's the type Matthews is getting - desperate "come and get me copper, you'll never take me alive" types. Highway Patrol was on in the 50s. Lots of guys we saw regularly only a few short years later on the Zone and Hitchcock and other stuff were not seen on Highway Patrol. But last night I saw a young version of a guy I saw on later shows whose name I can't recall. But other than that it was probably the cheapest made cop type show of it's time with Peter Gunn giving it a run for it's money at times.

Matthews knew Joad personally when he was a kid. It was the plight of the Joad family and how they were roughly treated by cops across the country that inspired Matthews to turn to law enforcement to make the world a better place for all in the one big soul of life.
