Did any American POWs escape from Japanese prison camps after being
captured during World War II?

Yes, there were several examples. Damon Jesse Gause was a fighter pilot
with the US Army Air Corps who was captured at Bataan, where he managed
to escape from a POW camp, & swim to Corregidor, after killing a guard.
When Corregidor fell to the Japanese, Gause along with a Filipino pilot
swam to the island of Luzon. Assisted by Filipino civilians, he along
with another American Officer, Capt. William Osborne, managed to steal a
boat from the Japanese & sailed to Australia which was over 3,200 miles
away. After a return to the US & a stint of fund raising for war bonds,
he returned to active duty & served with the 365th fighter group in
England. Sadly, having survived all of that, Gause was killed in a
training accident in March 1944 in southern England whenever the
modified P47 he was flying modified for ground support attack crashed.
