This sentence struck me as really odd:
"This week I was very lucky to attend a parliamentary reception held by SportsAid."

"lucky" should be "fortunate", I think?

If the person was lucky to attend the reception, it implies that
chance was a factor; that a lottery, for example, was held and the
person won a ticket.

If the person was fortunate to attend the reception, it implies that
the person was not normally someone who was able to attend the
reception.

Without further context, the safe word to use is "pleased".
