The Times and Telegraph (UK) have posted (registration-walled)
obituaries for the 29th Earl of Crawford and 12th Earl
of Balcarres (Robert Alexander Lindsay,born March 5th
1927,Master of Lindsay until his grandfather's death
in 1940,Lord Balniel (by courtesy) from then until his
father's death December 13th 1975[the same day as the
6th Earl Cowley,a coincidence I noted decades ago],
additionally Baron Balniel,life peer,from January 1975,
died March 18th 2023).

He served in the House of Commons from 1955 to 1974
(latterly-being the earliest-serving surviving former
MP) and like [the not closely related] Lord Cowley
was a junior member of Edward Heath's Government;
he served as First Crown Estates Commissioner,
Lord Chamberlain to the late Queen Mother,
chaired the Historic Buildings Council for Scotland,
Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland,
and National Library of Scotland,and was a Knight of the
Thistle and Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian
Order as well as a Privy Counsellor.

There are two older Earls (Elgin & Kincardine born 1924
and Airlie born 1926) surviving senior to him in
membership of the Thistle,but his title was older than
any of theirs.

His son accedes as 30th Earl of Crawford,his grandson
as courtesy Lord Balniel,and his great-grandson as Master of Lindsay.
