Some manifestation of the band is touring with ZZ Top later this summer apparently...

So why doesn't the present, no-original-members assemblage at least address this (quite-mercenary) nonsense by terming themselves "Lynyrd Skynyrd--The Next Generation" ?

Oh, and I was surprised to learn Allen Collins of the successor group The Rossington-Collings Band died on January 23, 1990. (I had always figured Collins had merely gone the into-oblivion way of John Oats post Hall & Oats.)

The name is owned by Judy Van Zandt, Allen Collins estate and Gary Rossington. It means they can license the name out, book tours and hire employees to perform etc

Did Johnny Van Zant (who was five when Rossington,Burns,and Junstrom
started playing together as "My Backyard") go to the high school where
Skinner taught (which has also been renamed)?

I'm just looking through the history section of lynyrdskynyrd.com
(which still has not updated from listing Rossington as occasionally
performing to deceased).

There are pictures of the old five...
Collins,Burns,Rossington,Junstrom,Van Zant...all dead.
Of a shortly subsequent seven...
Rossington,Collins,Wilkeson,Van Zant,Powell,Burns,King...all dead.
Of the four members of the "Three Guitar Army"...
Collins,Rossington,Wilkeson,Gaines...all dead.

On a web forum someone found this article from December:

after there are no Allman brothers,something previously discussed
here in the hope it would not happen,but an agent arranged creation
of "The Allman Brothers Band presents Trouble No More",implying the
deceased (not just,as it actually is,their estates) have authorized
that new band.
The article gets into technicalities of keeping trademarks active.
But it has this quote from Rossington:
"It's a tribute band right now,and everybody knows it's not
the original....Everybody who comes to see us is told that during
the show,and probably knows before they even get there.But people
still come to hear it live.In a couple of years it's supposed to
possibly stop,and maybe it won't...We'll decide then..."

(That article at RS currently has a link to the first "LS" performance
since Rossington's death,along with other links to memorial articles,
but I suppose they are dynamically generated and may not last).
