I've been using news.aioe.org for some years. It's been down since
Monday night. Their web site is 404. I haven't been able to find any
announcements about if and when it may be back. Since I've been using
it, It's never been offline for more than a few hours, at most.

News.aioe.org requires an account, but is completely free. For the
time being, I've switched to news.eternal-september.org, which is also
free and does not require an account. My past experience with it was
that it was less reliable than aioe, which is why I was using the
latter.

It's Paolo's hobby. It was never intended to be a major News site but so
many others have been taken off line over the decades, that's what it
has become. I'm assuming Real Life (tm) got in the way.

I'm not sure why you were discussing accounts. AIOE didn't require an
account but imposed posting limits. E-S absolutely does require an
account.

The fact that you're seeing my posts proves differently.

Now, please, argue about it all day instead of just admitting you made

Free access to the news server

news.eternal-september.org provides free read and write access
to all text newsgroups. It requires a registration that can be
done online.

The new user registration page is here.

http://www.eternal-september.org/RegisterNewsAccount.php

I put my credentials into the access file for by newsreader and force
authentication, required to inject articles via E-S.

AIOE never required account creation.

I have a great idea. Stop telling other people what they must and must
not post and worry about what you post only. That's how this unmoderated
Usenet thing is intended to work, each user responsible for what he
writes and not what anyone else writes.

In another newsgroup, someone posted that he received a reply from Paolo
in email. Here's the quote:

The RAID controller failed and its failure damaged the contents
of the disks. Today or tomorrow they let me know what can be
recovered, if nothing the recovery times will be long

Thanks. I wouldn't wish a RAID controller failure on anyone. Even when
the data is undamaged, one wrong move in the recovery attempt can be
irreversibly catastrophic.

Not that I would know first-hand.
