Yeah, put another couple gigawatts on a grid that is already
overloaded. (10-12gw now)

Even if only half of that is medium voltage distribution
That is a lot of wire to replace and some underground might take
years. The ducts may be full with the wire they have now.

Then there is this gem in your article

They still haven't said how that power gets from a wind or solar plant
upstate to NYC.
Most of the electricity generated in New York State gets turned to
heat in the NYC metro area.
