A Brooklyn landlord was charged with eight counts of attempted murder
after he allegedly set one of his buildings on fire in a dispute with
tenants over unpaid rent.

Rafiqul Islam was arrested by FDNY marshals for allegedly igniting the
blaze in an interior stairwell of a property he owns at 212 Forbell St. in
Cypress Hills in the early morning of Sept. 26, fire officials said.

Islam was apparently enraged that his second-floor tenants had stopped
paying rent and refused to move out, so he allegedly decided to force them
out by starting the fire, according to investigators.

A family of eight � six children and two adults � were home when the place
went up in flames, but all were able to escape to safety.

Unable to run down the stairs � where the fire was started � they ran to
the second-story roof of the building, where the parents tossed four of
their children into the arms of neighbors on the ground, according to
AMNY. The remaining two children were carried out by firefighters while
the parents jumped from the roof.

The family immediately suspected their landlord had intentionally set the
fire to force them out of their home, the outlet reported. He allegedly
threw black tar on the front door and threatened to burn them out of their
apartment before the September blaze.

Fire marshals obtained surveillance footage showing a hooded, masked man
entering and leaving the building before the fire started.

They then spent four weeks gathering, and pouring over, any video
available from cameras in the area before they finally found an image of
Islam with his hood and mask down, matching the suspect, fire officials
said.

He was arrested on Oct. 26 and charged with eight counts of attempted
murder, assault and arson.
