Did I use "friendly fire" correctly here?

Surveying a sea of dead bodies from the air, US Navy helicopter pilot Huey Thompson Jr, on a mission in to offer air support to US ground troops, deduced that those troops were conducting a massacre of Vietnamese civilians. He informed them that they would draw friendly fire from his helicopter's machine guns if they did not cease and desist. The US gave him a medal 30 years later for stopping the massacre. The wiki doesn't say what the Vietnamese, especially the survivors of the massacre, say about him.

P.S. Coincidentally, the type of helicopter he flew was nicknamed a Huey gunship.

I would say no. To me freindly fire hits a'friend' by accident. The
pilot deliberately threatens the soldiers with opening fire. That is not
friendly.

There is a very thoughtful and balanced, illustrated short film about the My Lai massacre; here:

You could call it "intentional friendly fire" -- an oxymoronic
euphemism which would distinguish it from the usual kind.

Friendly fire can be accidental or not.

----

M-W:
the firing of weapons from one's own forces or those of an ally
especially when resulting in the accidental death or injury of one's own
personnel

ed: note the "especially".

The Browns practiced in pads for the first time on Tuesday, and
Stefanski reminded them not to engage in friendly fire.

----

Oxford Learner's:
in a war, if people are killed or injured by friendly fire, they are hit
by a bomb or weapon that is fired by their own side

ed: No mention of it being accidental

Would this be a suitable context for sarcasm?

Wrong.

If they happen not to hit anyone, it's still friendly fire.

It's highly unlikely that a football team brought armaments onto the field.

Metaphorical/transferred/extended meanings are hardly useful in
an ordinary dictionary entry.

Unnecessary. Normal soldiers do not fire at their own.

Then, such a usage would be sarcastic.

My spelling checker unhelpfully adds particles. I didn't notice this one of its muck ups so I could weed out the IN it added. It's on my phone' I haven't figured out how to turn it off.

Deliberately shooting someone is never friendly.

I'd go for "He told [or warned] them that he would fire on them [or
fire his helicopter's machine guns at them]." There's no point in
inviting readers to object to this use of "friendly fire".

If A "accidentally" shoots B thinking B is an enemy whereas B is actually
an ally, the word seems indeed improper. But if A "accidentally" shoots
B, knowing B is an ally, when aiming at an enemy C who is attacking B,
then the word can make sense, as A's intent is basically "friendly".

I was once shot deliberately by a friend. I was a bit annoyed by that,
because it wasn't a friendly thing to do at all, even though I was
little damaged by the shot. I carried the mark of it a long time.

However, a mercy killing - the coup de grace - would be, I'd say, a not
unfriendly deed. Soldiers are, I'm told, known to have begged for it
when mortally wounded yet in prolonged agonies. It might even be called
generous, considering the possible consequences to the merciful shooter.
It might still rank as murder in law, for all I know.

Are you interested in telling us more?

OK, there might be an exception, which I hadn't thought of, to the
statement that deliberately shooting someone is never friendly.

Well... There were cases where someone asked a friend to shoot them in
the foot as a "Blighty wound".

I think the equivalent term in AmE is/was "Million-dollar wound".

While that is true, 'friendly' in this phrase is used to mean fire from
someone on the same side of the action.

"Murder in law"? That was my wife's mother.

Not really - the whole story becomes very personal and then tragic. I'm
no Shakespeare, but even he had to start somewhere - though not, I
think, with "I know, why don't I write a play. I think I'll call it
'Hamlet, Prince of Denmark'."

All right, to play it down: on that occasion I think drink had been
taken, the weapon was a tear-gas pistol, and there was a plug in the
barrel (or discharge port, or whatever it was properly called) which hit
me in the chest.

You poor fellow. My M-I-L and I got on pretty well, all things
considered. She loved me, and I loved her daughters. (I only married one
of them.)

My father was involved in a friendly fire incident during WWII. An army
group was training (in Australia) with live ammunition, and a
communications cable had been wrecked by bullets. My father was ordered
to crawl in under the hail of bullets and repair the cable.

As far as I know, he wasn't hit, but it must have been scary.

I don't see that as relevant. I believe "friendly fire" is defined to be
fire by friendly forces, i.e. by one's own allies. That doesn't have to
mean that the act itself is friendly.
