In perhaps the most pointed development yet* in the continuing slow death this century of commercial call-in talk radio on the amplitude-modulation band, KGO/Frisco several weeks ago flipped from newstalk to sporting-betting programming, which is an arguably-illegitimate radio format.

Once the 50,000-watt radio home of Bill Wattenberg--one of the most scientifically-literate hosts in the history of t he format--and Michael Krasney--perhaps the most talented liberal ever to host call-in radio--the three-call-letter heritage station might as well nowadays be airing infomercials 24/7.

* Previously I would have argued that distinction was held by the Entercom sale of KIRO/Seattle to the Mormon Church in 2007 (a move which soon enough resulted in the cancellation of the 2004-2008 broadcast Radioactive Seattle with Bryan Styble...so yeah, on this sad subject I'm a hugely biased reporter.)
