This highly disturbing assault on and probable maiming of Rushdie also prompts a posthumous acknowledgment to the late, and incomparable, Christopher Hitchens. As many people came to eventually know, Hitchens gave sanctuary to his fellow writer and close pal Rushdie in his sizable District of Columbia flat for a great percentage of the time the novelist was in hiding under the fatwa.

Even in a large place like the Hitchenses' lovely home*, having a live-in guest for months on end is an enormous sacrifice and interruption of anyone's affairs. But to do so in secrecy must have been a gargantuan effort for Hitchens and his family.

My fingers are crossed for a full recovery.

Rather, I know the Hitchens place is spacious and lovely because he gave C-SPAN2 viewers a partial tour, as part of its Book TV "In Depth" series. I can't recall even the year of the broadcast, so it's unclear if this was during the period(s?) Rushdie was living there, presumably in one of the bedrooms. (Actually, I like to imagine that Rushdie WAS secretly there when Brian Lamb and crew visited to tape for later broadcast, silently awaiting their departure a' la the daytime practice of Anne Frank's family...and then the Sunday it aired watched it all with bemusement in his Hitchens hideaway, on what the British-born Rushdie probably calls his "telly"!)

Alas, prelimary developments not good news.

fuck Hitchens and the Iraq War

Actually, I too mostly disagreed with Hitchens over our second Iraq martial face-off, and was even more profoundly at odds with him re Kissinger, whom I consider the most astute hire by President Milhous in either of his terms.

But Hitchens was hands-down the most compelling apologist for disbelief out there, and a more incisive analyst of Western civilization I don't know of.. (And as a hyper-educated Brit, late Hitchens--who died of an especially nasty case of esophageal cancer at only 62 on Thursday, December 15, 2011, three days before second-generation North Korean despot Kim Jung-Il, upon whom the iconoclastic journalist often reported--would never do what as I just did--to wit, end a sentence in a preposition.

A dozen times makes a lot more sense of the reports of eye and
arm injuries being the result!

The arem injuries are likely what's called "defensive" ones, as
he (or you and I...) would use our arms to try to block the knife.

(People who have solid in-person fighting training excluded
from this set...)
