The journal you are writing for may have a standard. If it does, then
follow it. If not, do what you prefer, but do it consistently. For
myself, I prefer "equations", but "eqs." is probably the most common.

The main question is whether to consider examples 7a and 7b
as a single example 7, or as two separate examples.
