Are other countries also playing miniture golf on minutire golf courses?

I ask because I had been told it was pretty much a US thing with some
courses in Canada, but I recently found out that the TV show "Holey
Moley" has a Australian version.

(Holey Moley is a very silly 'reality' 'competition' involving miniature
golf.)

Lots of it where I live:

(We also have "Holey Moley" on TV, but I don't watch that either.)

I've never heard of Holey Moley, but that could be because I rarely
watch commercial TV.

I've often played mini-golf.

I don't remember about New Zealand or Australia, but as well as
the US and Canada, my wife and I have played miniature golf in
England, Switzerland, and possibly other countries in Europe.
I have the impression that the density of places to play it is
greatest in California. On the other hand, when we went to
Ireland we didn't find any places to play it there.

It used to be fairly common in France when I was a teenager. No idea what
it's like today.

Interesting word. Lewis's spelling reflects the common three-syllable
pronunciation (like "furniture"), but surprisingly it's not from the
same origin as minimum, minor, minute, etc. from Latin words reflecting
a root *mei 'small'. It seems that mini(ature) starts with Latin minium,
a red pigment (cinnabar, red lead), "possibly of Iberian origin" (OED).
Thence miniare, to decorate with minium, and miniatura, the decoration
so produced. Used with reference to illustrations in medieval
manuscripts, which are perforce small (squeezed in among the letters),
hence to any very small painting, then adjectivally for a very small
anything. Dropping the -a- syllable seems to have been common in both
BrE and AmE by the 20th century, but perhaps it keeps getting restored
from the spelling.

No idea. It seems to be Dutch-only English.
(invented in the fifties, it seems)
To be fair, English also uses 'midget' for small versions of things,
as in 'midget submarine',

Probably on its way out, as proportionate dwarfs have been objecting
to "midget" for a couple of decades.

Even the once popular "Midget Gems" have been renamed to "Mini Gems".

Also "dwarf." The PC version is "little person."

Interesting that even when Peter Dinklage was on Colbert promoting
the Cyrano movie, in which presumably his stature rather than the
nose is the thing he thinks is ugly, it wasn't mentioned. Nor when he
hosted SNL (because Game of Thrones) were there _any_ little-people
jokes or sketches.

WIWAL in Indianapolis, we went to see the "Midget" car races. The
Midgets were scaled down Indianapolis 500-style race cars back in the
day when Indy cars and the Midgets looked like this:

https://i0.wp.com/www.theengineblock.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Karl-orr-speed-shop-vintage-race-car.jpg?w=800&ssl=1

They were short races on high-banked tracks, and quite exciting.

I see that Midget racing is still done in Indiana, but the cars look
more like dune buggies or go-karts.

The Midget racers are called "speedcars" in Australia where it seems
to be an active thing.

I haven;'t heard the word in contemporary speech for a couple of
decades. It was used in Bad Santa (My #1 Christmas Movie) in 2003, but
it was used by a character who was, well, bad.

Dwarf has always been far more common.

So, "dwarf" has dwarfed the usage of "midget".

WIWAK there used to be "midget wrestling" as a regular part of televised
wrestling matches. As I recall them, the competitors were all dwarfs.

I didn't like those matches, and I'm glad they're gone, but I suppose
they were a source of income for the participants.
