Are there any examples of "grudge the <subject>" forms? I spotted two on
lexico but it's not clear they show what I want

I'm looking for constructs like "don't grudge the muslims for their
beards" or "don't grudge the devils for their sense of humour" - i
suspect this usage is peculiar to indian english (or is archaic and was
retained in indian english)

You might look up "begrudge" and see if that has the meaning you're thinking of.

Keeping in mind that the somewhat old-fashioned standard use of
"begrudge" gives it an indirect and a direct object: "Don't begrudge the
Muslims their sense of humour".

The structure Madhu gave us has the direct and indirect objects swapped:
don't grudge <direct object> for <indirect object>.

When talking about pre-war events, Mother once said "I grudged
(name)the five dollars that we paid him."

(This was the thirties; five dollars was extremely hard to come by.)

I am very annoyed that I cannot remember the name, because I'm told
that I cried and could not be comforted when our hand was drafted. The
adults wondered how I knew that this time he wasn't coming back.

Mom said that she felt very bad that she and Dad couldn't drive him to
town that last day.

Louie! It was Louie! I've no idea how he spelled it.
