I have no idea what this means:

Great Dane
What does Great Dane stand for?
Name change

In 1878, a committee was formed in Berlin which changed the name of the "Englische Dogge" (English mastiff derivatives) to "Deutsche Dogge" (German mastiff), this being the Great Dane. This laid the foundations from which the breed was developed.

The end of that paragraph says:

Some German breeders tried to introduce the names "German Dogge"
and "German Mastiff" on the English market, because they believed
the breed should be marketed as a dog of luxury and not as a working
dog.[5] However, due to the increasing tensions between Germany and
other countries, the dog later became referred to as a "Great Dane",
after the grand danois[17] in Buffon's Histoire naturelle, générale
et particulière in 1755.

Jack Garbus raved about his one time fling with a Danish woman.
I remarked that she must have been a great Dane.

Still called Deutsche Dogge in German. Englische Dogge and Dänishe Dogge
are among the "alternative names".

I guess it was not The Danish Girl, though.

But I understand - I can't resist a Danish myself.

When I was a child, a very schmaltzy (Schlager) song was popular called
"Tränen lügen nicht" (tears don't lie). One of the most famous German
comedians made an almost equally popular parody titled "Dänen lügen
nicht" (Danes don't lie), and it followed every mention of Danish people
for at least a decade.

So far, probably no STS warning required, but I could add that the
melody (originally composed by an Italian) was used for a couple of
other songs, in English notably "When a Child Is Born".

Buffon? Now, there's a wonder of a word in French.
