Dear friends and family,

A huge thank you to Cari, Mum's minister, for the thoughtful and kind tribute she wrote for my Mum.

Mum's obituary will be published in this weekend's issues of the Sun and Province.

Marion Diane Carr
February 14, 1948 - January 16, 2022

With heartfelt sadness, we announce the death of Marion Diane Carr (nee Young) on January 16, 2022, with family at her side. Marion was a faithful member of Crossroads United Church (& St. John's Strawberry Hill previously) who appreciated lively music, engaging worship, & provided committed service within the congregation and Wider Church, over many decades. She was a valuable participant on Presbytery, Conference, & General Council committees accomplishing the work of the Church. Marion was a bold advocate for anyone experiencing injustice in the systems of the United Church & a fearless defender of the rights of marginalized communities. She went to the wire as the Chair of Fraser Presbytery for the sake of gay and lesbian members in 1988, and she was committed to addressing the Church's complicity with colonialism & forging a new relationship between settler & Indigenous peoples. Marion often did "heavy lifting" for the sake of others in the life of the Church and never shied away from difficult conversations. She employed her quick wit & incisive analysis to making decisions while a member of any group. Not everyone appreciated the sardonic humour Marion brought, but as one gained her respect, the twinkle in her eye would reveal her softer, and very compassionate side.
Marion loved attending the theatre, travelling the world with her friends, and was an active square dancer for 50 years. Marion started her journeys with cancer & dementia at the same time. Through the increased isolation of the pandemic, she relied on family & dear friends for daily walks & connection. Her granddaughter Paisley's birth & presence in the family's life has been a source of delight and unconditional love that Marion treasured over all. Please pray for husband Dave (53 years); daughters Heather & Jennifer (Rob); granddaughter Paisley; brother Sid (Margot); numerous nieces & nephews including Linda, Gary, Sandy, Cindy; & the extended family. Marion was predeceased by her parents, Norman & Ethel; dear sister Ev; & nephews Greg, Chad, & Bob. She deeply mourned their losses. A service to celebrate Marion's life will be held at Crossroads United Church on Saturday, February 19 at 2 pm. The family will invite those who will attend in person and all others are invited to attend via Zoom. In lieu of flowers, a gift to the MS Society of Canada or the Mission & Service Fund of The United Church of Canada is appreciated.
