And in England, it persisted well into the lifetime of many posting
here today -- the notorious Agatha Christie title, and at least one
of the Alec Guinness "Ealing comedies." (I can't say which one; one
of our TV stations did a series of maybe all of them in a week or
two, and they blend together, like Marx Brothers movies.)

The RAF Wing Commander Guy Gibson's dog that was the mascot of the 617
Squadron.

Nigger was featured in the 1955 movie "The Dam Busters", but will be
re-named "Digger" in the re-make of the movie.

Or that the person wanted was the kind who wouldn't prefer a more
polite term, or who wouldn't be so well educated or whatever that one
might be tempted into politeness.

Nah; Americans talk funny. They pronounce Volte-face as
"volt face".When they have occasion to pronounce it, that is.
If you can't say [vɒlt] or [vɔlt] with a short [ɔ], just say
about-face.

Degrees of ordinariness have a connection to ordinary. Calling some one a
moron would be ordinary only relative to more outre terms like the regional
slang term introduced, even in the region where such slang is used.
