two climbers did, as related in "Seven Years in Tibet". But I don't think
they were SS.

I read that book some time ago. But after posting I looked it up with
some help:

with tons of material. harrer and his book are mentioned only in the
"See also section".

it may be that much of it is just propaganda material.

after 1946 the us/cia moved swiftly to secure the dalai lama and control
the events and a reliable version of the history came out
eventually. but the pre war history it appears to me is not the same
ground

Of course there were ethnic Germans in many parts of the Soviet Union.
Once the Nazis invaded (1941), their loyalty was subject to question,
and Stalin had them all shipped east.

But this "Holger Hildebrand" was supposedly with the invading forces at
Stalingrad, and was taken to Siberia as a prisoner. Yes, there were lots
of POW's too, but it's hard to believe one of them would have been
allowed to take his movie camera along.

The same site mentions an earlier fake video of a live woolly mammoth,
apparently crossing a river in Chukotka. This was widely circulated in
Russia in 2012, but turned out to have been concocted from a distant
shot of a bear with a large salmon in its mouth.
