I'd like to have a car. I never gripe about my economic situation. I am very content. But a car would be nice. I used to think having a car around might make me lazy. I never relied on a car. Looking back I'm glad. My last car was given to me by "The Back" when he left Hollywood to go back to Chicago. "The Back" was a Jew and looked every bit of it. His name was Joel Solomon. I liked the guy. Very unique, nothing phony about him. Anyway, one night at my place he told me he was going back to Chicago. I thought he'd use his car back but he said he was going to fly. It was a 63 Buick. This was in the mid 80s. Then he said, "You can have the car", paused a moment and added, "on one condition." What's that? "I want your Freddie Blasse album (Pencil Neck Geek). I said, "You got it."

Anyway, whew, I really got off track there - I was talking about a car making me lazy. When I had that Buick I always had to park it 4 blocks or so from where I lived. I didn't mind because I didn't rely on it. I made a rule for myself to not use the car unless I had to go more than 3 miles on foot. It was an easy rule to keep because parking spots don't come easy. Anyway, I think today having a car might actually help me to move more. Drive somewhere and talk the walks. Put some exploration into it. Yes, that's what I need - a car. Can you buy me one? Or just send me the money and I'll find one on my own. Thanks.

Heard today the price of use cars is going up. They are getting expensive like everything. Need to wait for the downturn. Pick one up cheap. Be patient.

In my life I bought 11 cars and never paid over $100 for a single one. Two were dogs and I knew it when I bought them. The others were great. Three were standouts - the 56 Chrysler Windsor, the 48 Plymouth, and the 59 Studebaker Lark small sized station wagon. With the 56 Chrysler in L.A. I would get on average 1 or 2 notes per week on the windshield asking if I wanted to sell. I paid $99 for it.

I have not owned a car since The Back gave me the Buick. That was 35 years ago. I never sold a car. All were either towed away or, in the case of the 56 Chevy that blew a rod in Florida, pushed into a swamp. I am proud of never needing a car. To me it was luxury.

One of the guys I drove for in L.A. had two sons who worked on cars. One of them offered me a car for free. I saw it. I was ok. But I knew on the basis of earnings along with a routine that involved working strictly for the weekend I would never be able to maintain the car. And I told the kid just that, and I meant it. I wanted the car but felt I'd just be wasting it. How long would it last before some problem came up I couldn't handle? So I told him for his own good to give it to someone who can take care of it. I don't care what cars cost is what I'm trying to say. Even if I get one for free it could wind up being a real pain the ass. I never learned to fix them and don't trust the people who are paid to do it. So I don't care. Just saying it would be nice to have a car (with free upkeep) because I would definitely use it because truth is, take working out of it, like in the cab, I love driving. I relax behind the wheel. That's what makes me a great driver.
