I would imagine that they weren't real close to the bomb.
that Hiroshima freedom Memorial that is still standing, it was exactly at Ground Zero and the bomb was 2000 feet up . Had the bomb been any closer , or had the bomb been off to the side where it would have exerted sideways force on the walls instead of a strictly downward force, it would've been rubble.
