If I set up a NNTP-only node with no web-facing portal are there any
housekeeping or configuration changes that will help to harden it or
eliminate inefficiencies of operation?

I want to set up a couple archiving peers with no web access and
eliminate any unnecessary operational overhead. I suppose a start is to
delete or access control the web directories. Is there anything else I
should look at?

Hmmm...

To start, you are correct to disable the web server ability to serve
pages.

There will be activity by rslight to keep threads up to date for the web
interface (does nothing for the nntp interface), but disabling that would
require code changes that would break on upgrade. It should be fine to
just let it happen.

But if you want to disable it, then in spoolnews.php find 'thread_load_newsserver'
function and comment it out.
